How can Wheels to Work help you?

FOR WORK EXPERIENCE

If you are looking to gain some practical skills and experience in the world of work, Westlea Housing Association runs a scheme called ‘Whatever!?’ which offers work placements in lots of different work environments including:

• Multi-trade building and maintenance
• IT and office administration
• Furniture recycling
• Unisex hairdressing
• Animal and pet care
• Community projects
• ...and many more!

You do not have to be living in a Westlea property to qualify and you can also continue to claim Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) or Job Seeker’s Allowance (JSA) while you are on your work placement.

Through the ‘Whatever!?’ work placement you will get:

• Three to four days a week work experience
• A personal ‘mentor’ to give support
• Information and advice to help you find employment
• Access to training
• A certificate of competence
• A reference

If transport to the work placement you are looking to do is a problem, Westlea Housing Association will contact Community First to arrange your own Wheels to Work transport.

The costs of Wheels to Work transport for the Whatever!? scheme are minimal. There is a deposit of up to £30 required – although if you are unable to afford this deposit you may only need to pay some of it or none at all, depending on your circumstances. There are also no weekly ‘wear and tear’ charges involved, although you will be responsible for your own petrol, oil and cleaning costs.

Click HERE for more information about the Whatever!? scheme and for contact details. Please be aware that places are limited.

FOR WORK-BASED LEARNING

If you are looking to do a ‘block release’ skill-based college course – a course which will involve you regularly needing to get to a work placement whilst studying towards a college qualification – and you have no means of getting there then Wiltshire Wheels to Work may be able to help you.

To qualify for Wheels to Work transport for skill-based college placements you also need to meet the following criteria:

  1. You are looking to do a course at the designated college* for the town/village in which you live unless you have exceptional circumstances (e.g. evidence that an employer would not employ you without the qualification you are looking to obtain at a non-designated college). (*Your designated college is often the closest college to where you live – click HERE for more information about your designated college)
  1. No other transport alternative is available to you and the distance to the work placement provided as part of the course cannot realistically be covered by walking/cycling etc.

The costs of Wheels to Work transport for skill-based college placements are minimal. There is a deposit of up to £30 required – although if you are unable to afford this deposit you may only need to pay some of it or none at all, depending on your circumstances. There are also no weekly ‘wear and tear’ charges involved, although you will be responsible for your own petrol, oil and cleaning costs.

Please be aware that places are very limited

IF YOU LIVE IN OR NEAR SALISBURY PLAIN

‘Making Tracks’ is a charitable project which provides 50cc scooters to people living on or near Salisbury Plain who are unable to get to work or work-based training.

If you live in any of the villages listed HERE then Making Tracks may be able to help you.

What’s included and how much does it cost?

Making Tracks provides the following support:

  • A fully road-ready 50cc scooter* for up to 6 months
  • Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)
  • Breakdown cover
  • Maintenance costs
  • Jacket, gloves and lock
  • Back-up support from Community First

An opportunity to save via a Credit Union scheme towards the costs of your own means of getting around (Credit Union schemes are community based local savings and loan schemes which offer people a chance to save regularly and to borrow at a reasonable rate of interest.)

Costs

The costs of the Making Tracks scheme are fairly small. There is a non-returnable deposit of £30 required. Depending on your own circumstances, there is also a weekly ‘wear and tear’ charge payable to the scheme. This ranges from a minimum of £10 per week up to a maximum of 10% of your net wage. You are also responsible for your own petrol, oil and cleaning costs.

Who can apply and how?

To apply you must be aged over 16 and have a provisional or full driving license. You also need to be living in one of the villages listed above and have no means of getting to work (work could be ordinary paid employment; a paid apprenticeship or work-based training. If you are unpaid, your employment support agency must provide your deposit and weekly wear and tear costs).

Each application to Making Tracks will be assessed on individual circumstances.

You can download the Making Tracks leaflet here for more information. (PDF file)
