Stokes Croft Play Area

Landfill Communities Fund Project. Technology Allows Able and Disabled Children to Play Together in Calne

In a district wide survey, Calne was identified as having a lack of children's playground facilities. Westlea Housing Association has developed Stokes Croft, an area of social housing for young families. Calne Town Council owned a piece of land within the development and consulted the Residents Association concerning the design of the play area. At least five of the children living in the development have special needs and some are in wheelchairs.

The project was to create a play area with equipment that could be used by all children whatever their abilities and including those in wheelchairs.
This is the first such play area that Community First has funded using landfill tax credits and we are particularly grateful to Viridor Credits for providing Calne Town Council, with a significant amount of the funding to make it possible.

The facility was opened by Chris Holmes MBE, Britain's most successful blind Paralympics swimmer, winner of nine gold medals and holder of four world records. Community First would like to encourage parish and town councils, or voluntary organisations, in other areas to make application for funding for similar projects.
