Landfill Communities Fund
Most grants are between £5,000 and £50,000 depending on the type of project, its location, proximity to a landfill site, total project cost and the proportion of matching funding, particularly local fundraising.

Community First accesses around  £550,000 of Landfill Communities' Fund Grant Aid each year on behalf of community projects in Wiltshire and Swindon and our staff are particularly interested in plans for capital, community projects within 10 miles of Calne.

Eligible projects might include:

  • community halls, scout & guide halls etc.
  • play areas/MUGAs
  • museums
  • conservation and bio-diversity projects on public or private land
  • skateboard parks or cycle tracks
  • paths (which are not a statutory responsibility)
  • sites and buildings of historical and/or architectural interest
  • sports clubs/facilities

This is not an exhaustive list.

    Applicants are usually:
  • community organisations  (with or without constitutions)
  • parish or town councils

Interested in applying?

You should be aware that making a successful application for Landfill Communities Fund is often, but not necessarily, a slow process. Community First has first to establish that a project is eligible under the Entrust regulations and then a considerable amount of information has to be collected to make an application to a Landfill Site Operator ( LSO). The procedures for applications to an LSO vary from one to another. Most LSOs only hold their selection meetings on a quarterly, or even a half yearly, basis.

You need to consider carefully, all other potential sources of funding for your project. The timing of applications for funding can be crucial, especially where local authorities and Lottery Boards are concerned. Note, LCF funding cannot be made retrospectively.

To make your first enquiry and to discuss your project prior to application, please telephone the Grants Manager Rebecca Lamont Jiggens or Grants Assistant Susanne Pidduck on 01380 732805 or email grants@communityfirst.org.uk

Castlefield Park

Castlefield Park Access
This park in Calne not only forms a link to the countryside but also forms part of National Cycle Route 4 but it’s paths were muddy and often waterlogged for a considerable part of the year.

Having successfully obtained a £19,350 grant from Viridor Credits they were able to transform the access through the park for all members of the community, improve the drainage, lay new surfaces on all the existing pathways and install a piece of artwork by a local artist which compliments other artwork already at the park.

Wiltshire ScrapstoreWiltshire Scrap Store and Resource Centre
A grant of £12,000 from The Hills Group Ltd enabled the recently relocated Scrap Store make its self safe and accessible to all.

The main entrance door was widened so that it could be safely and easily accessed, the counter area was re-designed and built to give a variety of working heights. The toilets were reconstructed to make them wheelchair accessible. They now also have an emergency exit and emergency lighting in the building.

This enables both staff and community members to make good use of this fantastic resource centre which also helps reduce the amount of waste entering the landfill sites.
