Developing affordable housing for first time buyers and low income families
is one of the crucial issues that influences the economic and social strength
of rural communities and is a major contributor to longer term community
sustainability.
The Rural Affordable Housing Partnership for Wiltshire & Swindon has
been established with the aim to help encourage and develop more
affordable rural housing in the County. The Partnership includes the Government office of the South West and the Housing Corporation together with Local Authorities and Housing Associations and it has appointed a Rural Housing Enabler to work with the Partnership and with rural communities, local landlords and local landowners to help develop a co-ordinated rural housing approach and to deliver more affordable housing where it is most needed.
The Wiltshire & Swindon Rural Housing Enabler is based at Community
First and works with local communities, land owners and developers in
a number of key areas:
- Housing needs assessment
- Advice and information on effective housing development
- Facilitation and “honest broker” services between involved
development parties
- Help in identifying suitable housing sites
- Working with housing providers to provide improved rural housing information
- Helping to influence local, regional and national rural housing strategies

How to complete the Housing Needs Survey form:
This survey uses a standard form supplied by DEFRA and is in two sections.
Section one: Gives an opportunity for everyone to help create a general
picture about housing stock and circumstances.
Section two: This should be completed by everyone requiring accommodation;
newly forming households for example, mature children unable to move out
of the parental home due to high accommodation costs. Households hoping
to return to the parish who have had to move away due to local housing
costs should also complete this section.
In conjunction with filling out this questionnaire you will also need
to register on the District Council/ Borough Housing Register to be eligible
for housing which might result from the survey
